Pictures of Mississauga, Ontario Canada
Mississauga (Ontario, Canada) has been my home for many years, and I took all the pictures on this site in Mississauga -- the landscapes, cityscapes and wildlife.
What most surprised me when I first moved to the Erin Mills area was the abundance of wildlife -- not deer or other large animals, but a wealth of raccoons, chipmunks, birds and the occasional coyote, though I never did get a picture of a coyote.
KarenZabawa.com was a birthday gift from a friend, and since then, I've used it as my personal web site. My main site is SnapshotJourneys.com, a travel themed site, that has a section devoted to Mississauga -- Streetsville, Mississauga restaurants, maple syrup festivals, and more, which are in the Canada section, under Ontario .

Credit River in Mississauga
This picture of the Credit River in Mississauga, Ontario, is the view from the Burnhamthorpe Road bridge between Mississauga Road and Credit Woodlands.
the Culham Trail passes underneath, on the east (Toronto) side, and heads north into Streetsville proper.

Mississauga Chinese Centre
I took this photo for story on the Centre, one of several articles I've had published about it. See one such article and more pictures at

Niagara Falls Ontario
Mississauga is about an hour's drive from Niagara Falls, Ontario. See more pictures at
More Niagara Falls Ontario. I try to get down to the Falls once a year, but as what usually happens with those of us who live so close to a world tourist attraction, we don't always make the effort.

Bunny in the Springtime garden
One spring morning, when I opened the front door to get the newspaper, I saw this little bunny rabbit snuggled into the flower bed, enjoying the sun.
There are enough rabbits in the area that some people try to get rid of them, or send them packing. They love to nibble on garden greens and leafy perennials. In summer, around dusk, be careful if you are out driving the neighbourhoods, as one of these bunnies could go bouncing in front of the car.

Back yard in Mississauga Ontario
I took this picture in the back yard of a semi-detached house I had in the Streetsville area, around Thomas and Erin Mills Parkway.
In an effort to reduce lawn maintenance, I designed the back garden without one.

Skunk in garden in Mississauga
this is a view of the same back yard as above. The first year I lived there, every day, in early spring into summer, this skunk came from her den in the field behind my house,
The skunk followed the same route each day through the back yard, and was very good at ferreting out the fat snails plaguing the plants. I liked to watch passersby on the sidewalk oblivious to a skunk that was so close to them.

Monarch butterfly on Cosmos flower
This picture was taken in a different garden in Mississauga, when I lived near Mississauga Road and Burnhamthorpe. The monarchs, who seemed to be particularly fond of cosmos, came each year on their migration. This particular series of monarch photos, was taken at 11 a.m. on September 11, 2001. Monarchs flock to these flowers, cosmos, then head south to winter in Mexico.

Macaw in the apple tree
Bailey, the visiting macaw, prunes the back yard apple tree, even though it really didn't need it.
Bailey belongs to a friend, who often took him on outings. A particular favourite spot was Erindale Park, near Dundas Street and Mississauga Road, where Bailey would entertain park picnickers and fishermen.

Raccoon in Mississauga
In still another Mississauga neighbourhood, I took this picture of 'Rocky Raccoon' hunting for food near Lakeshore and Mississauga Road in Port Credit. This is behind the Tim Horton's and Esso Station, in early spring. Directly behind this spot is the old Petro Canada lands, that have abundant wildlife, whose future is up in the air while various agencies and companies decide what is to become of it.

C N tower - Tour CN Toronto Ontario
Toronto's CN Tower (and the white dome of SkyDome, now renamed Rogers Centre) as seen from Toronto Islands.
There's a ferry to take you from Queen's Quay to the island's parks and beaches.
If you are coming to Toronto, try to take this trip to the Islands.

Winter snow in Mississauga Ontario Canada
I took this picture in the back yard of my house near Burnhamthorpe and Mississauga Road. These trees were in the bike path behind the houses.

Goldfinch common bird in Mississauga Ontario
This female goldfinch in the cosmos was one of many who come to feed in late summer. Finches love the cosmos seeds, and spend much time each day swaying from the stalks as they feed.
Female finches show more green-yellow; Male goldfinches have the bright yellow markings.

Lake Ontario shoreline in Mississauga Canada
I took this picture at Jack Darling Park, in Mississauga. See my travel blog post for more Lake Ontario Shoreline pictures here, and also for pictures of nearby parks and gardens in Port Credit (you may have to use the Search feature, as I now live in Port Credit and usually post photos on the blog).

University of Toronto in Toronto Canada
This is the University of Toronto, in Toronto, Ontario, where many Mississauga students commute for classes.
Mississauga also has its own campus, called UTM (University of Toronto Mississauga) on Mississauga Road north of Dundas. The university bus takes students between campuses. Students attend either or both campuses, depending on their courses.

Byrd, our African Grey Parrot in a potted palm
Byrd, our African grey parrot, is playing 'Jungle Bird' and having such a good time that we let him destroy the plant. (We didn't name him; he came to us at age 10).
We treated him to two potted palms, then stopped - getting too costly, though he ws funny to watch. He's now 22, and still as frisky, with quite the personality.

Byrd the African Grey
Such a fine looking parrot! He speaks a number of phrases and words, and has an extensive and varied sound effects and whistling repertoire. He's now in his early 20s. He could live well into his 60s.
Byrd is very lucky when it comes to medical care, as one of the very few avian vets in the province of Ontario has his practice at Britannia Animal Hospital in Mississauga. Doctor V. has been taking good care of our various birds for many years.
